Introduction

Welcome to ITEM (IntraThecal EFIC Masterclass on pain)

EFIC is pleased to announce the launch of ITEM: a 2-day residential course covering the field of intrathecal spinal analgesia.

ITEM provides an educational opportunity to European health care professionals who have experience in intrathecal drug delivery and wish to expand their knowledge of spinal analgesia. Click the “Curriculum” button for further details on course content.

Courses will run in November, December and January at 4 European pain centres recognised for their expertise in using intrathecal analgesia for the management of pain. Click the “Centres” button for further details on the centres, course leads and course dates.

Who can apply?

ITEM is an advanced-level course aimed at European medics who have at least 2 year’s experience in intrathecal drug delivery. Nurses with several year’s experience with intrathecal analgesia and an endorsement from the head of department may also be eligible. All courses will be taught in English so proficiency in English is required.

Please submit applications as soon as possible, as places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, subject to selection criteria being met.

Successful applicants may be eligible for a travel and accommodation grant.

A registration fee of 100 Euros (payable to EFIC) will be required from all delegates.

Comment: Following the success of the course in Pavia, Dr Laura DeMartini says "I hope that the Masterclass in Pavia has been a learning opportunity for the participants as it has been for me during the organisation period and during the course for the interesting opinion exchange with colleagues from Italy and other European Countries".

Feedback from Dr. DeMartini: IntraThecal EFIC Masterclass (ITEM) on pain treatment, Pavia, Italy

On 6-7 November 2009, the first edition of Intrathecal EFIC Masterclass on Pain took place in Pavia, Italy, in the Congress Centre of Fondazione S. Maugeri; the Masterclass has been planned in four European countries.
The course was addressed to pain specialists with some experience in pharmacological intrathecal neuromodulation through implantable systems. In Pavia, there was a delegation of pain physicians coming mainly from different Italian regions but also from Spain, France and Israel.
The objective of the course was to improve the knowledge about available drugs for intrathecal infusion with data from recent publications about efficacy and side effects; comparisons of drug availability and regulations in different countries; particular attention was given to ziconotide because of the number of studies and the recognition of intrathecal administration (morphine has no particular approval for this route of administration in Europe) in all countries where it is available (in Israel it is not yet available).
Different infusion systems (implantable and external pumps) were presented by delegates from the companies with opportunities of practical trials on programming and refilling.
Other topics were: patient selection criteria and algorithm, trial options, drugs and system monitoring and practical issues.
There was a lecture on some research aspects about the relationship among pain, hormones and opiates. This and other lectures gave opportunities of discussion and experience exchange among experts from different countries on a topic where international guidelines (/Polyanalgesic Consensus Conference) are still a poor help to the challenge of following these difficult patients.
