LISBON 2009 – NOT JUST A PAIN CONGRESS

There have been many reports – by the media, professionals, specialized journals - on the outcome of the 6th Congress of the European Federation of IASP Chapters held in Lisbon in September of last year. And it is no exaggeration to state that they unanimously recognized the Congress as a big success, as testified by the huge number of attendees from very many countries – not only Europe but all over the world. This is not surprising, considering the programme, a rich “menu” of sessions, topics and highly qualified speakers from virtually every speciality involved in pain understanding and treatment. Needless to say, I completely agree on the general great appreciation of the scientific quality of the event and efficiency of the organization, everything enriched by the fascinating background of a city like Lisbon. I warmly congratulate the EFIC President, Giustino Varrassi, the Scientific Committee and the whole EFIC Board for their efforts in making these results possible.
But what I would like to underline here is something more than the “perfect outcome” of a carefully planned event. It is the general atmosphere that any attendee could perceive there; and I am speaking as such, an attendee who heard comments and interacted with colleagues not only during sessions but throughout the typical congress day: at breaks and lunch time, in the corridors, while viewing posters or walking past the stands. Everywhere there was a feeling of energy and impulse to do more, the will by each person to take back home – to one’s own hospital, clinic or private practice – the latest developments in pain to make a better life for patients in his/her own country. It was common to observe groups of people in lively discussion about controversial issues raised during the sessions, comparing approaches in different countries, exchanging notes and visiting cards, and promising to get in touch, to send and receive the latest papers on one or the other topic. Networking occurs at all Congresses, but such a generalized involvement of participants is, in my opinion, not so common. The perception in Lisbon was that every single attendee felt part of the whole even if not directly involved in the programme – as a speaker, chairperson or poster presenter – and experienced the Congress as personal. I think this is a crucial aspect of a scientific event; the success is measured not only by the level of the programme content, but also by the energies being moved and the propulsive input for single individuals to make a better job in their own home setting. Lisbon 2009 was this type of success. By analyzing differences – in the “pain world” in the various countries – EFIC showed how to promote equality. Equality at better levels of management for the patients who are suffering.
