European Week Against Pain / Global Day Against Pain
EFIC would like to announce its launch of a year long campaign on “Pain in the Older Persons” to highlight and gain recognition of the growing demand of pain management in the over 65 age group. EFIC with IASP have decided to join together to hold a press conference on 12th September, 2006, launching the start of this campaign. This will fall during the week of EFIC´s triennial European Congress Pain in Europe as well as commemorate the European Week Against Pain as well as the IASP Global Day. Chapters and Chapter members, who undertake national activities normally in October before the European Week Against Pain, have been advised to organize activities during the above week. Due to chapter members’ attendance at the Triennial congress, EFIC understands that this may prove difficult and therefore also sets aside a week in October (16th - 21st) to extend national activities. The overall concept for the Pain in Older Persons campaign is to raise awareness of chronic pain in older populations and ensure that sufferers, clinicians, policy makers and the media across the world are aware of the severe impact of chronic pain in both personal and economical terms and also are knowledgeable on what is being done to address these actions. The press conference will present scientific facts as a result of research by the Special Interest group of IASP and information from a pilot study which was undertaken by EFIC through an employed media research company. The media pack and press release will be available on EFIC website on 8th September 2006. National Pain Societies are requested to undertake activities to raise awareness for this campaign. The press conference will take place between 11:00 and 12:00 on the 12th September 2006 at the Hilton Istanbul Hotel, Mercury room, in Istanbul Turkey.
